PORTRAITURE WORKSHOPS

In 2016 a series of engaging community art workshops were undertaken as part of our 10th year anniversary celebrations.

All workshops were free for the public enjoy. 

An introduction to portraiture in Charcoal
by Michael Simms

Where do you start when depicting something as infinitely complex as the human face? This workshop will help you develop the skills required for rendering a convincing portrait. An intensive two-hour life drawing workshop by NSW artist and Black Swan Prize finalist, Michael Simms. Beginners and advanced artists welcome. The workshop will cover the following topics: The anatomy of the human face; Facial expressions; Lighting a portrait; Capturing a likeness; Rendering hair and eyes; Tonal drawing versus linear drawing.

Masterclass: Oil painting workshop for beginners to intermediate
by Nigel Hewitt

A not to be missed master class by renowned WA artist Nigel Hewitt and previous Black Swan Prize for Portraiture winner. This intensive oil painting workshop will focus on colour mixing and tone and is suitable for beginners to intermediate artists. Places are limited so please book quickly.

Essential drawing for beginners

Drawing skills are essential to creating successful artworks. In this workshop, hosted by Black Swan Prize 2016 finalist Thomas Delohery, you will learn the fundamentals of drawing and how it can affect the overall structure and success of an artwork. Specific emphasis will be on shape, colour and control with special guest subject, author and child holocaust survivor Henri Korn, adding to the unique experience of this workshop.

Thomas Delohery Black Swan Prize

Impasto and tonal techniques in Acrylic

Explore the wonderful process of building a face through a series of acrylic-based techniques incorporating impasto and tonal activities. This intimate workshop by Black Swan Prize 2016 finalist Mark Tweedie encourages a confident approach to painting and the chance to further develop your portraiture skills, regardless of experience.

Please note, this workshop incorporates thick paint that will remain wet at the conclusion of the workshop. Participants should take appropriate care when transporting works from the venue.

Screen-printing demonstration & activity

Working with artist and screen printer, Danni McGrath, try your hand at screen-printing and take home your own limited edition Black Swan Prize for Portraiture tenth anniversary tote bag. 

Visitors are welcome to take part, or simply watch this activity anytime from 11am-1pm.
