In 2016, a series of live portraiture demonstrations were undertaken by Black Swan Prize finalists as part of our 10th year anniversary celebrations.

All demonstrations were free for the public enjoy. 


Live Portrait Demonstration

Artists and members of the public joined Black Swan Prize 2016 finalist Craig Soulsby at ArtHouse Dine as he demonstrated an alla prima painting method, starting and finishing an oil painting in one sitting, working wet on wet.

Craig specializes in making portraits using an impressionist technique that produces a striking combination of likeness and mood.

Live Portrait Demonstration

The public enjoyed watching Black Swan Prize 2016 finalist Filippa Buttitta as she created a portrait from life of holocaust survivor Henri Korn, the subject of Thomas Delohery's work. The conversation was captivating for all those who attended!

Filippa specializes in drawing on the spot, creating sketches that capture the essence of her subject. Filippa’s subject, the late Judy Cassab, was well known for taking this approach to drawing from life.

Live Portrait Demonstration

Members of the public watched in delight as Black Swan Prize Salon finalist Leon Holmes demonstrated his fine oil painting technique to create an artwork from life of Dr Shelley Craddock.

FACE OFF:  The Live Portrait Challenge

The public were enthalled as they watched WA portrait artists take on a live portrait challenge of the Fabulous Famous Sharron at the Perth Cultural Centre.  So many fantastic styles and techniques were showcased with all artists enjoying the experience of painting someone so incredibly famous!

Screen-printing demonstration & activity

Working with artist and screen printer, Danni McGrath, members of the public tried their hands at screen-printing and took home their very own limited edition Black Swan Prize for Portraiture tenth anniversary tote bag. 

Visitors were welcome to take part, or simply watch this activity.
