Our Beginnings

ARTrinsic Inc, a not-for-profit organisation, was founded in 2007 to provide an avenue for artists to exhibit works of portraiture within Western Australia. The first year featured a retrospective exhibition of Western Australian entrants in the Archibald Prize and was a resounding success.

Due to the exhibition's popularity, ARTrinsic decided to create an annual national portrait prize for the public to enjoy. The Black Swan Prize for Portraiture is now the third richest portrait prize in Australia and continues to grow thanks to the support of our generous sponsors.

Our Founder - Tina Wilson

Tina Wilson is the Founder of the Black Swan Prize for Portraiture and was the Executive Director of ARTrinsic for 10 years. During that time, she was the public face of ARTrinsic Inc and the driving force behind it.

After successfully taking it to its tenth year anniversary at the Art Gallery of Western Australia in 2016, Tina stepped down from her role as Executive Director to return to her own artistic practice. She remains a valuable supporter of the Prize.

The Heritage Prize

In 2012-2014 ARTrinsic Inc was delighted to partner with Heritage Perth in the creation of a unique Heritage prize. This prize featured depictions of any aspect of the heritage of Perth city, and helped raise awareness and appreciation of its built and natural heritage. The Heritage Prize has now come to a close.
